e-Kaiwa #28: Where Angels Fear to Tread (3/30)

April 1st is known as April Fools’ Day throughout much of the Western world. The origins of this unusual festivity are shrouded in obscurity and various mythological explanations from the Canterbury Tales to Noah’s Ark, but similar traditions celebrating pranks and mischief appear in European records dating back to at least the 16th century.

Many fools have come and gone in the vicissitudes of history since then. However, an interesting discovery can be made regarding the apparent limitations of human folly by comparing the diverse archaeological records we have access to today. As it turns out, in all the societies and civilizations that mankind has ever developed and lived in, there has never been a single documented case of an individual so foolish that they didn’t sign up for a free online language exchange with native speakers when the opportunity presented itself.

Incidentally, e-Kaiwa #28 will be held on Wednesday, March 30th from 20:00 to 21:00, so hope to see you there!

群馬といえば温泉ですね！そして温泉といえば、古代ローマを舞台とした漫画作品『テルマエ・ロマエ』※。それから次にきっと思い浮かぶのは、共和政ローマ末期の独裁官ガイウス・ユリウス・カエサルの暗殺事件、に違いありません。ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの戯曲が好きならおそらく知っていますが、カエサルは生前ある予言者にこう警告されました：「Beware the ides of March!」つまり「３月１５日に気を付けろ！」（「ides」は古代ローマの暦で「月の真ん中の日」を意味します）

カエサルは３月中旬に大変な目に会いましたが、今度の水曜日、３月１６日開催の「第２７回e会話」では、英語のネイティブスピーカーと会話を楽しんでいただけます！古代ローマ帝国にタイムスリップしなくても、現代グンマ帝国で異文化体験ができます！

語学のレベルを問わずどなたでも参加しやすい環境を心がけていますので、興味のある方はぜひご参加ください！

※『テルマエ・ロマエ』の映画版では、群馬県の温泉がロケ地に大きく使われました。一作目は伊香保温泉、二作目は草津温泉、法師温泉と宝川温泉。

e-Kaiwa #27: Et Tu, Brute? (3/16)

What comes to mind when you think of Gunma? Onsens! And what comes to mind when you think of onsens? The excellent manga about an ancient Roman bath house architect transported forward in time: Thermae Romae!* The next logical leap is of course the assassination of the Roman dictator Gaius Julius Caesar by the Senate in 44 BC. As Shakespeare fans among you will of course know, Caesar was warned before his death by a soothsayer to “beware the ides of March.” Most people know this more or less refers to the middle of March, but did you know that “ides” actually has a specific definition? It’s the 15th day of March, May, July, and October and the 13th day of every other month in the ancient Roman calendar.

The day following the ides of March (the 16th) is historically known in Latin as “e-Kaiwa #27” and consists of a festival where English and Japanese speakers come together in Gunma for a free online language exchange from 20:00 to 21:00!

Lend your ears to your conversation partners and don’t let Japanese be Greek to you!

*Many of the scenes in the movie versions of Thermae Romae were actually filmed in Gunma! You can see Ikaho Onsen in the first one, and Kustsu Onsen, Hoshi Onsen, and Takaragawa Onsen in the sequel.
