e-Kaiwa #8: JOMO JET Takes Manhattan (2/24)
Ever wonder why February is the shortest month of the year? It turns out that the answer is really complicated and involves ancient Roman numerological superstition. To make a 2000-year-old story short, there were only 10 months back in the day of the early Roman Empire, starting in the spring with March and ending at the start of winter in December (hence the numerical etymologies of the latter months: septem (7), octo (8), novem (9), decem (10)).
Eventually, Numa Pompilius thought it was nonsense that the intervening period was left undefined just because it was agriculturally irrelevant (he minded the gap), so he demanded the addition of January and February at the end, with February acting as a catch-all for the odd leftover days. Over time, the system that was to eventually become the modern Gregorian calendar underwent many revisions and modifications, and it just ended up more convenient to tweak the already weird month than to throw off any of the other ones. That’s why leap days are still in February even today.
In any case, the brevity of February means there is less language-study time than in any other month, so make sure to come to e-Kaiwa on the 24th to make up for lost time!
